Memphis is a city of contrasts when it comes to gutters. In Midtown and Central Gardens, you're dealing with 1920s–1940s homes where the original wood fascia often needs careful repair before any new system can go in—skip that step and the new gutters won't hold. In East Memphis and Germantown-adjacent areas, the homes are larger and newer, but mature maples and bigger roof footprints create their own volume challenges. Down on the bluffs along the river, humidity and occasional Mississippi-influenced storm systems add another layer of wear on exterior materials. We've done hundreds of projects across the city. One of the more involved was a 2025 installation on a 4,200 sq ft Victorian in Central Gardens: we restored the rotted fascia, installed 6-inch copper-accented seamless gutters with micro-mesh guards, and added decorative downspouts that matched the home's historic detailing. It passed Shelby County Code Enforcement review without issue. In the South Main Arts District, we upgraded a converted warehouse loft with a commercial-grade system designed to handle the heavy runoff that comes with a flat industrial roof during bluff-area storms. After the 2024 flooding, we also worked on 18 Harbor Town townhomes—replacing damaged systems with reinforced aluminum and extending discharge lines to meet the Shelby County Storm Water Management Manual. Shelby County enforces the 2021 IBC/IRC with local amendments. Gutter replacement alone rarely requires a permit unless the job exceeds $3,000 (which triggers Home Improvement licensing requirements) or involves roof structure work. Historic district properties may require a design review for material and color choices. All installations need to meet the standard slope and discharge requirements—downspouts should discharge 5–10 feet from the foundation to protect against Memphis's notoriously expansive clay soils.
